How to Set Realistic Career Goals for the New Year

The new year is just around the corner, and with it, many people will be setting their sights on new goals and aspirations. For many people, the new year presents an opportunity to finally make the career change they have always wanted or maybe a career change to improve their lives in some way. Whatever your goals may be, here are a few tips to help you set realistic and achievable career goals for the new year

Define Your “Why”

Take some time to reflect on the previous year, where your career has been, and where you would like to see it go. If you are at the end of a career or the end of a job, reflect on why you left or lost the position. Think about whether you were happy with the work or not and ponder what you may wonder in your next job.

If you are still currently employed, consider why you are looking to leave your current job. Is it because of happiness? Are benefits important? These things will define what your next steps should be in pursuing your next career.

Be Engaged in the Search

Passive job searchers are less likely to be picked up by an employer. Be engaged in your job search, even if you are currently employed. When you send out a resume or inquiry, set a reminder to follow-up about your application. Take the time to write to the potential employer about why you are interested in seeking employment with them specifically. If you are turned down, reach out about why you have been passed up for the job. This can help you set your sights on more realistic positions or different jobs altogether.

Network With Others in the Industry

Find out what other people within the industry and similar industries are doing to find work. Talk to your friends, colleagues, and other people whose career advice you respect. These people can give you an idea of what you would need to do to reach the goals you have in mind. They can also give input as to whether or not your goals are reachable within the industry right now.

Volunteer and Job Shadow

Something else many people don’t consider when they want to expand their careers is that they must expand their knowledge. Volunteering, job shadowing, interning, and continuing your education are all good ways to see to it that your career goals are met. Your combined experience will make you more attractive to potential employers.

Take an Inventory of What You Have to Offer

Consider your skillset and how to best market your abilities. Have someone take a look at your resume too. Be sure you are properly communicating the skills you offer and customize your displayed abilities based on the position at hand. You may also consider contacting your alma mater to see if they might help provide career counseling to alumni such as yourself.

Partner with a Recruitment Agency

Working with staffing professionals can help you achieve your career goals as well. They have the ability to put you in front of top employers and get you the contacts you need to succeed.
